Alec Bangham died last month. Amongst his many achievements he discovered liposomes and helped develop 'Artificial Lung Expansion Compound' (Alec) the phospholipid based treatment for neonatal lung distress. This research impacts my work in two ways. Years ago, I worked on novel applications of Alec for the treatment of adult respiratory disorders and for the prophylaxis of surgical adhesions. More recently, liposomes have been an object of interest since they represent a rival technology to the 'polyaphron dispersions' that I work with now.
His Guardian obituary.
I will try to find a link to his original paper on liposomes (Bangham et al. (1965) J Mol Biology 13 238-252. Also, Bangham & Horne (1964) J Mol Biology 8 660-668 on the role of electron microscopy in the discovery of liposomes)
